Instrument Care / Maintenance

If you value your instrument, take it in to a luthier once a year to make sure it is staying healthy.

I take mine in every 4-6 weeks for adjusting.

What strings should I buy?

Most students will do fine with Dominant strings (Thomastik Infeld). The most cost-effective strings can be found online, like Shar Music. Medium guage, steel E, ball end. Always have a full spare set of strings. Also, resist the urge to buy the cheapest strings you can find. They don't last.

What sort of rosin, shoulder rest, case should I buy?

I've had good luck with Dominant rosin and also Magic Rosin. Kun shoulder rests are nice, though they're not made for people with long necks. Buying a new case? Make sure everything fits -- shoulder rest, strings, bows, even the violin.

I found a violin I like. Can I buy it?

Sure, but I'd like to be a part of this process to make sure it is a good fit for the student.
